Frequently asked questions
Orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics or orthodontia, is a specific form of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misplaced or poorly positioned teeth as well as facial abnormalities.
Although many assume that orthodontists and dentists are quite similar, their roles are quite different. A dentist will focus on the health of teeth, the mouth, jaw, gums and nerves found in this region, whereas an orthodontist’s focus is a little more specialized. An orthodontist is a dental professional or specialist
whose primary focus is to straighten misaligned teeth. They will work to diagnose and prevent malpositioned teeth and develop treatment plans specific to the patient. Orthodontists are dentists who have had additional 2-3 years of specialized training after becoming a dentist.
The right age to start visiting an orthodontic professional can vary depending on the patient. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists suggests that children should have their first visit around the age of 7. However, this is not a firm age, as some dentists may recommend a consultation earlier. It’s also important to note that braces and orthodontic treatments are not unique to children and teens. Orthodontic treatment can begin at any age depending on the patient’s needs
It depends of the patient and level of severity. For some patients, Invisalign aligners can be worn as little as six months to see results. The average length of wear, however, is roughly 12 to 18 months. For more complex treatments, some patients may need to wear aligners for over 24 months.
Invisalign aligners work by moving teeth into an ideal position. Some patients may experience some initial pain in their teeth and jaws as your teeth get used to the shifting. To ease the discomfort, some orthodontists recommend oral exercises to be performed a few times a day or when reinserting your Invisalign aligners.
Both braces and Invisalign are used to straighten teeth and improve your smile. The main differences between the two are that Invisalign is removable, whereas braces are somewhat permanent for a period of time. Determining which option is best, really depends on the patient and the orthodontic treatment needed. A consultation with an orthodontic professional can help you determine if braces or Invisalign is best for you.
There are a number of benefits to choosing Invisalign aligners, including:
- Reduced or invisible appearance or orthodontic appliances
- Increased comfort
- Improved cleanliness and ease of cleaning
- Wearers are not restricted to certain foods
- Improved smile and straighter teeth
